Finland University has operated in the Gulf region since 2014. The first project was launched with the Ministry of Education of the Sultanate of Oman and the latest one with a university in Dammam, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 2019. There is clear interest towards Finnish educational competencies in the area, and Finland University is committed to strengthening its activities in the region together with Finnish key partners such as the University of Helsinki Centre for Continuing Education HY+.


Professional Development Programme for English teachers

Finland University designed and conducted a two-year Professional Development Programme for English Teachers in the Sultanate of Oman. The programme was conducted in 2016-2018 for the Specialised Centre for the Professional Training of Teachers, working under the Ministry of Education. Finnish expert team was responsible for designing and creating the programme to develop pedagogical expertise as well as language skills of English Teachers. The programme consisted of intensive face-to-face training weeks, online training as well as active research done in teachers own professional environment.

School Immersion Programme for Saudi Arabian Teachers

During the six-month Building Leadership for Change through School Immersion programme, 117 Saudi teachers improved their English language skills, participated in cutting-edge pedagogical training, took part in a three-month supervised observation course in Finnish schools, and practiced 21st century education skills. Aim of the programme was to coach participants to become change agents in their home schools in KSA with the help of teacher training and customised tools from the Finnish educational system. The training programme took place in Finland in 2017, and it was conducted by Finland University and University of Helsinki Centre for Continuing Education HY+. The programme was funded by the Ministry of Education of The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Boosting Entrepreneurship and Innovations in University Education

Saudi Arabia has set economic diversification as the country’s objective, and entrepreneurship and innovations have a central role in the Saudi Mission 2020 strategy. Saudi Arabian universities wish to offer their students competencies and opportunities to engage in entrepreneurial activities. During a one-week workshop organised in November 2019, almost 160 university teachers and staff members were trained by Finnish experts in Dammam, Saudi Arabia to be able to incorporate entrepreneurial thinking and innovation skills in their teaching. The objective is to create new courses and study programmes as well as to integrate entrepreneurial mindset to university curricula in general leading to new university-based innovations, entrepreneurs and start-ups.
