Have you ever thought about how one decision might change everything? It might change where you are, some of the people in your life, how you look at things, and in some ways, it might change you. I’m sure we can all think of one or two such decisions. For some people it was backpacking trip through Europe for six months and meeting people from all over the world. For some, it’s that one first date that never ended. When you think about it, it’s funny how incredibly important some of these decisions turn out to be. You may be a believer of destiny and kismet, or you may think that it’s all hogwash; either way our decisions carve our paths. Today I want to share with you my “one decision”.

Let me shortly introduce myself: I’m Megha from India and I’ve been in Finland for a bit less than six months. I’m an international ambassador and Master’s student at the University of Turku. So how did someone from the land of elephants (no, we don’t go to school on the back of elephants) and the Taj Mahal end up in the land of saunas and salmiakki? As you’ve guessed, it was my decision to come to Finland for my Master's.

MEGHADIPA GOSWAMI, UTU

One year ago, I was battling with writing my Bachelor's thesis and applying to schools for Master’s programmes. I was a nervous wreck because it was all happening faster than I could comprehend. I was also edging towards a crossroad, which made me kind of happy and extremely nervous. The months that followed were a roller coaster of events and emotions including graduating from my Bachelor’s. As I started to receive letters of acceptance from various universities, I was faced with my decision. I’ve always admired those who have known from the beginning which course they want to study and where. But unfortunately, I wasn’t one of them!

How to make a right choice

I had pinned universities all over the globe based on programmes I found interesting. So how to narrow the list down to which one is the best option for you?
Over the next few weeks, I really had to do my homework. Just a few of the things I pondered on: What is the program structure? How are the faculties at the department? How much is this degree going to cost me? What are the job prospects of this degree? What are my expectations from the country that I plan to go to?

How to decide what to study

Why did I choose Finland

After countless hours of weighing the odds against each other, my head and heart chose Master’s Degree Programme in Molecular Biotechnology and Diagnostics at UTU in Finland. Why so? Finland is one of the best places to be in, in terms of opportunities in Biotechnology. The infrastructure and the standard of research here is truly commendable. The University of Turku also offers great scholarships for its students.
I can’t speak for other students, but I’m extremely happy that I decided to choose UTU. A few decisions go a long way, this one was one of them.
