On December 2nd, Van Lang University and Finland University signed a co-operation agreement for Finland University and the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) to deliver a commissioned Master's degree programme in Tourism Marketing and Management for students in Vietnam.
This is the first time the UEF is offering its Tourism Marketing and Management programme in another country. It is planned that the first cohort of students shall begin in August 2020.
"We're very happy Van Lang University is investing in delivering the University of Eastern Finland's tourism programme, and we're looking forward to getting this long-term co-operation started," says UEF Programme Director, Juho Pesonen. "The programme is based on decades of research we have conducted in the field of tourism marketing and management."
The 2-year 120 ECTS credit programme offers students a wide perspective on tourism studies, with tuition covering four main areas: nature tourism, digitalisation, sustainable tourism, and well-being tourism.
"These themes resonate well in the Vietnam market, where tourism is growing rapidly," says Pesonen. "Tourism business study programmes are often focusing on marketing, but the one we offer provides students with insights into the bigger picture of tourism business development too."
The programme is conducted as a blended-learning model that combines online courses with classroom teaching at Van Lang University's campus in Ho Chi Minh City. UEF will operate a 'flying-faculty', where teaching staff will travel to Vietnam to deliver most of the classes. The longer-term plan is to share tuition responsibilities between UEF's and Van Lang's lecturers.
"This is also a great opportunity for UEF to apply our research and learn more about tourism development on a global scale," says Pesonen. "Van Lang University has excellent facilities and fantastic lecturers, and we also have high hopes for the research we can conduct together."
Since the University of Eastern Finland launched its Tourism Marketing and Management programme in 2017, application numbers have doubled each year. International interest has been high too, with applications from 44 countries for the last intake.
